Michael Owen has signed a one-year extension to his contract at Manchester United.

The former England forward moved to Old Trafford on a free transfer two years ago after his contract at Newcastle ran out.

"Michael has proved to be a top footballer. It’s unfortunate Michael didn’t get more opportunities but the form of Chicharito put everyone in the shade and his partnership with Rooney proved invaluable," said the Red Devils manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

"I am delighted Michael is staying for a further year and we will look to give him more opportunities in the new season.”

Owen has scored 13 times for United in 47 appearances. He was an unused substitute in the Champions League final defeat at the hands of Barcelona.

He has 89 Three Lions caps, with 40 international goals, but has not represented his country since March 2008.
