Victoria Sandell Svensson, the 32 year old Swedish forward and team captain, made the decision to end her international career after the Euros, before the tournament began, but would have hoped for a happier ending.
The shock defeat of the Swedish team, who topped England's group, means that Norway, who at one point thought they may have been going home themselves, after coming third in their group, have been rewarded with a place in the semi-final, against Germany, on the 7th September.Norway won 3-1, with Svensson scoring a consolation goal in her last match for her country, her 68th in her career.
In the other quarter final, Germany emerged comfortable winners, after defeating Italy 2-1, in Lahti.
