Sheringham, who is currently looking for a new club to continue his remarkable playing career, will be remembered as a true English footballing great.

He was capped 51 times by his country, scoring 11 goals.

His performances alongside Alan Shearer in Euro 96 will long be remembered, with his display in the 4-1 thrashing of Holland at Wembley perhaps the most memorable.

And three years later he scored as Manchester United stunned Bayern Munich with a late smash'n'grab raid in the Champions League final in Barcelona.

Sheringham's playing days were synonymous with Tottenham, but it was his spell at Old Trafford which saw him finally win some silverware - with the 99 final capping a remarkable treble for the Red Devils which had already seen them claim the Premier League and FA Cup.

Last season Sheringham became the oldest outfield player in the Premiership, while a West Ham player, and also the oldest player to score in the Premiership.

He was released by the Hammers this summer but is likely to stay in the game.

Championship side Crystal Palace is an option, where remarkably he would be a team-mate of his son Charlie, while he has also held talks with Bournemouth.

Sheringham's former Manchester United team-mate Ryan Giggs, who recently retired from international football after 64 caps for Wales, has been an OBE.
