A brief history of the FIFA Women's World Cup, which was first held in 1991 and has taken place every four years since.

The 2007 finals will be held in China, returning to its original host country. In fact only two other countries have hosted the showpiece event in women's football, the United States (1999 and 2003) and Sweden in 1995.
