| Gary Cahill's outside hopes of claiming a place in England's squad for the World Cup finals appear to be over after he suffered a blood clot in an arm. |
| He missed Bolton Wanderers' goalless draw with Fulham on Saturday after being taken ill during training the day before. The problem got worse at the match, with the arm severely swollen, and he was taken to hospital.
The centre-back, 24, will miss several months of the season. He had been touted as an England contender, but even if he returns before the end of the current campaign is unlikely to impress Three Lions coach Fabio Capello enough in that time to go to South Africa in July.
Owen Coyle, the Bolton manager, said the absence of Cahill will be a big blow to his side's battle against relegation from the Premier League.
"Gary will be disappointed as he has so much to play for. He is one of the best players at the club and he had a big role to play, no doubt about that," he said.
"He also had a chance of going to the World Cup - but that chance will come again. He is a terrific lad and someone we love working with. He has a great mindset." |
