Named in Tottenham Hotspur's starting line-up for their Premier League game at Crystal Palace on Sunday, Harry Kane's appearance was his 40th of the season for club and country.

Prior to the Selhurst Park clash he had netted 38 goals and shown himself to be invaluable both to Mauricio Pochettino and Gareth Southgate throughout the campaign.

While many of the players who will be in Southgate's party for Russia 2018 will have benefitted from some rest periods throughout the season, with the top English clubs generally using squad rotation, Tottenham have needed to call on Kane to get them out of some FA Cup scrapes in recent weeks.

And with European football still on their agenda as well as the chase for a top-four finish, the striker may head to the World Cup as the England player with the most football behind him in 2017/18.
