Gareth Southgate knows some of his Nations League squad will be on a high and some need picking up with nine of the initial 27-man party picked for the four-team finals in Portugal set to be part of the Champions League Final the previous weekend.

"We have got to make a quick but accurate assessment on where they are over those few days," Southgate told the BBC of his plans for the Liverpool and Tottenham players who meet in the biggest game in European club football just five days prior to England's semi-final against Holland.

There were few surprises in the squad with Nathan Redmond of Southampton earning a call-up after an excellent season, Southgate sticking largely with the tried and trusted formula which has been so successful over the past year.

His selection will also have been made with one eye on the European Under-21 Championships in Italy and San Marino with the likes of James Maddison set to be part of Aidy Boothroyd's squad for that tournament as England look to add to the recent haul of silverware garnered by age group sides in recent years.
