England's starting line-up for the Euro U21 opener v France gave a vision of the Three Lions future with boss Aidy Boothroyd naming an attacking side containing two of the big hopes for the senior national team in the coming years.

Manchester City's Phil Foden and James Maddison of Leicester City were both handed a start in Cesena behind a front three of Demarai Gray, Ryan Sessegnon and Dominic Solanke.

The strength of the options open to Boothroyd, who also included Manchester United target Aaron Wan-Bisaka at the back, was shown by Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount, impressive Championship loanees in the season just gone, both being named on the substitute's bench.

England Women end their World Cup group stage campaign against Japan on Wednesday evening and the two sides will know each other well having met at the three previous competitions.

"I’m happy that we get to face them again, striker Ellen White told the FA website.

"They’re another top nation and completely different to playing Germany, France or USA.

“It’s always a tight game against Japan and I think we bring out the best in each other."
