England Daily Digest: 21 June

There was disappointment for England Under-21's at the European Championships on Friday evening as Aidy Boothroyd's side lost 4-2 to Romania to all but end any hopes they had of reaching the semi-finals in Italy.

That represents a real setback as there were high hopes for another trophy at age group level given the way England qualified for the tournament and with a squad containing players such as Phil Foden and James Maddison.

A see-saw clash in Cesena was actually goalless with 18 minutes remaining, England twice coming back from a goal down before two late Romanian goals earned them all three points.

England's opposition contained a host of players with full international experience but the tournament will have been something of an eye-opener for many of the Three Lions players who came into it with big reputations and hopes of graduating to Gareth Southgate's senior squad in 2019/20.
