Friday evening's 4-2 defeat at the hands of Romania mean that England Under-21's have lost both of their matches at the European Championships in Italy and now have only the slimmest of chances of making the semi-finals.

In the wake of a dramatic game in Cesena, where all of the goals were scored in the final quarter, head coach Aidy Boothroyd was asked about his own position but vowed to stay on having signed a new contract only relatively recently.

Results at this level in years past would not usually have led to speculation about the future of an Under-21's manager and reflects the increased importance the FA have placed on results below senior level.

Although the ultimate goal remains to produce players capable of making a smooth transition to the senior side, Boothroyd is seen as being in charge of a talented group who have had every opportunity to prepare properly for these finals.

That his future is being called into question is the other side of the coin of the resources he has been given to work with.

England's final group game is against Croatia on Monday evening.
