England Daily Digest: 29 June

After a largely successful 2018/19 campaign in which they made a 100% start to Euro 2020 qualifying and also reached the finals of the inaugural UEFA Nations League, England will look to secure their place at the European Championships over the coming months.

The key dates for the rest of the year are as follows:

7 September – England return to Wembley for their next European Championship qualifier, Bulgaria providing the opposition.

Two qualifiers to date have produced ten goals for the Three Lions and three points here and against Kosovo three days later will put one foot into the Euro 2020 Finals.

10 September – A historic first game against England for Kosovo and although they may be disappointed not to be playing at Wembley, the FA’s decision to play the game elsewhere has paid off with tickets at Southampton’s St Mary’s ground selling out in quick time.

11 October – It’s a Friday night in Prague (to the concern of the FA’s security team according to comments made recently) as the Czech Republic look to gain a measure of revenge for their 5-0 defeat at Wembley.

14 October – Then off to Sofia for the return fixture with Bulgaria.

14 November – England will be disappointed if they haven’t already secured Euro 2020 qualification by the time Montenegro arrive at Wembley.

With the Premier League season well underway by now there may be some new faces in Southgate’s squad for this game and the final qualifier three days later.

17 November – A new destination for travelling supporters as the Kosovan capital of Pristina gets ready to host what will be a landmark game for the hosts.

30 November 2019 – Bucharest, one of the venues for Euro 2020, hosts the draw for the finals.

If England have qualified then they will already know that Group D is their destination with a minimum of two matches at Wembley. A third game will also be on home soil unless Scotland also qualify. They will be placed in the same group if so and a separate draw will be made to determine who hosts the Auld Enemy clash.
