There was a double success for England sides on Sunday as the Lionesses defeated Scotland 2-1 in their opening World Cup match in Nice and Gareth Southgate's men won a penalty shootout against Switzerland to finish third in the UEFA Nations League.

Two first-half goals on the French Riviera looked to have set England on their way to a comfortable three points but Scotland showed the huge strides they have made since a 6-0 defeat by the same opponents at Euro 2017 and caused hearts to flutter with a 79th minute strike.

Phil Neville's side held on, however, and the England manager was pleased to finally get the World Cup underway after a long build-up.

"I was pleased with the result," he said.

"The first game is always the most difficult game but we set certain standards and the players know we need to keep meeting those standards.

"If we don't, we get second half performances like we just got. We've got to be relentless now.

"I think at 2-0 in this heat, we thought it was going to be easy in the second half. It's a lesson that every game in this World Cup is going to be difficult."

In Portugal, meanwhile, both sides found it hard to raise their game for a meaningless play-off at the end of a long season but England at least showed their World Cup work on winning penalty shootouts has not been forgotten as Jordan Pickford not only saved a spot-kick but netted one himself.

Southgate said afterwards: "There was a determination to go out with a strong performance. We owed it to ourselves as a group and the 98% of the fans who have supported us incredibly.

"We recognise now that you don't get many opportunities as an international team and we want to really strive to take the next step."
