England have four wins out of four in World Cup qualifying after beating Andorra on Saturday afternoon without doing much to excite the Villa Park crowd.
A goal in each half earned Thomas Tuchel's side all three points, an Andorra own goal breaking the deadlock before Declan Rice headed home a Reece James cross midway through the second period.
As expected, England had the majority of the possession against a visiting side intent on staying organised and not allowing too many chances and they were helped in their quest by a home team who didn't quite deliver the energy their head coach is looking for.
Debutant Elliot Anderson earned praise for a composed display in midfield and showed little sign of being overawed by the occasion while Noni Madueke on the right flank offered more attacking threat than Marcus Rashford on the opposite side.
The home crowd were buoyed by the entry of Aston Villa duo Ezri Konsa and Morgan Rogers to the fray while another substitute, Morgan Gibbs-White of Nottingham Forest impressed in a late cameo appearance.
With Serbia having won in Latvia earlier in the day it sets up Tuesday's game in Belgrade as the key fixture in the group, as was always likely to be the case when the draw was made.
Avoid defeat in a hostile atmosphere and England will be within sight of a place at the 2026 World Cup.
