England Ready for USA Test

After coming from behind to beat Brazil, England take on hosts USA in the SheBelieves Cup on Saturday evening.

Manager Phil Neville will have been pleased with the way his side turned around a game where they had been on the back foot for the opening 45 minutes and went in at half-time trailing by a goal to nil, albeit the penalty awarded to the Brazilians could certainly have been reversed had VAR been in operation as it will be at France 2019.

But England gained a morale-boosting victory against a fellow World Cup contender thanks to goals from Ellen White and Beth Mead which sets up the USA meeting nicely.

"I had a lot of tired players but the determination in the second half was as good as I've seen as manager," said Neville after the game

"The pitch was really slow so we had to play in their half and I knew they would tire. We scored two great goals and I enjoyed the test, our defenders had to defend, and it's a big result."

The host side, the current reigning World champions, remain the yardstick by which other teams measure themselves and Neville will have noted that Japan, England’s final opponents in this competition and in their group for the World Cup, earned a 2-2 draw against the US in their opening game.
