England Women Look To Secure Their World Cup Place

A tough test awaits England Women against Wales at the end of August as the battle for World Cup 2019 qualification reaches a crucial stage.

Jayne Ludlow's Welsh side have defied expectations to take their hopes of topping the group into their final game and a win against England at Newport's Rodney Parade on 31 August will seal their place in France next year.

That in turn would most likely consign England to a series of play-off matches to book their spot.

And the significance of the game to Wales is indicated by the fact that tickets sold out in just 24 hours with a partisan crowd set to roar them on.

"It is a game we thrive on, because this is an opportunity of a lifetime for some of these players," said Ludlow recently.

"We are really, really excited about it."

Phil Neville's England, held to a goalless draw by the Welsh at St Mary's in the reverse fixture, will top the group if they avoid defeat in Newport and then again in Kazakhstan the following week.

His squad is likely to be a familiar one as the new-look domestic season does not start until after the two qualifiers but, going forward, the England manager will hope that the introduction of new clubs into the top leagues, most notably Manchester United, will increase further the potential options at his disposal.
