England's Potential Path Changes After Big World Cup Week

A number of surprises have marked the first week of Russia 2018 and one of the results is that England's potential path through the competition may be altered quite dramatically from that we may have expected when the tournament began.

The thought was that England would get past Tunisia and Panama but fall to Belgium and end up in second place in Group G.

So far so good with the Three Lions seeing off a difficult Tunisia side and in confident mood ahead of Sunday's game against Panama but with Belgium having also looked good in their opening game.

But the above scenario was expected to see England then meet either Poland or Colombia as the winners of Group H before their World Cup hopes ended at the Quarter-Final stage against Germany.

This week's surprises, however, have put Japan and Senegal in pole position in Group and one of those two sides could seal top spot when they meet on Sunday afternoon.

And Germany's defeat against Mexico means the holders may not top Group F after all.

It's very early days but at least England are included in the permutations this time around after their early exit in 2014.
