Everton Keeper To Start For England

Jordan Pickford will get the first chance to stake a claim for the number one jersey in Russia when he starts Friday's friendly against Holland.

Gareth Southgate has four goalkeepers in his squad for the double-header against the Dutch in Amsterdam and Italy's visit to Wembley on Tuesday but there are varying degrees of concern about the form and experience of each of the candidates to be the regular custodian.

Pickford will be playing against a Dutch side managed by Ronald Koeman, the man who signed him from Sunderland for Everton.

Ahead of his first game in charge of the Netherlands national team, Koeman said: "He is still a young goalkeeper and he needs to improve but already he is at the level where he can compete at the level of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League."

England's opponents are set to veer away from their traditional 4-3-3 formation for the fixture as the Dutch begin plotting an upward curve following their failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Speaking at his pre-match press call, Koeman, quoted on Football Oranje, said: “We no longer have – with all due respect – the real top players. Then you look for it in other things, like another system.

"In my selection policy I have also chosen players who can play this system perfectly. It is a sum and we have worked on it and trained on it. I want to see that again against England. ”
