FA Miss Opportunity To Take England 'Away'

An impressive attendance of over 60,000 were at Wembley on Thursday but significantly fewer remained in the stadium to see Harry Kane's stoppage-time winner seal qualification for Russia 2018.

Many in the crowd expressed their displeasure at the performance that England turned in and the whole evening had an air of a missed opportunity, on and off the field.

Clearly visible on the Wembley pitch were the markings from recent NFL fixtures and those, together with Tottenham's season-long tenancy at the stadium, should have seen the Football Association decide to take England matches back on the road for 2017/18.

Wembley is paying its way, and more, for the FA, a situation that will clearly be helped by 30 Spurs games this season.

So, why not play the qualifiers against Slovakia and Slovenia at different venues?

Packed houses at Stoke, or Southampton, or Norwich, would have transformed the type of atmosphere that can surround these games.

They would also have been better disposed, perhaps, towards the Three Lions team if they had not had to make their way to Wembley on a Thursday evening (scheduling outside the FA's control) and also keep an eye on the clock to make an early exit even if the match itself had been worth watching.
