How England's Decade Started

The Three Lions ran out 3-1 winners against Egypt in March 2010 in their first match of the new decade and one of their final preparation matches for the World Cup in South Africa.

Over 80,000 at Wembley watched the reigning African champions take a surprise lead before England hit back with second-half goals from substitutes Shaun Wright-Phillips and Peter Crouch (2).

The excellent englandstats website tells us the game saw Leighton Baines win a first cap while there would be no more for both Wes Brown and Carlton Cole.

Writing on the BBC website, Phil McNulty felt that Crouch had given Fabio Capello food for thought with the Italian having previously preferred Emile Heskey as Wayne Rooney's strike partner but it would be Heskey who started the opening World Cup match against the USA three months later.
