Looking For England v Spain? Head To Sky

Fresh from their run to the semi-finals of the World Cup, England return to action at Wembley Stadium on 8 September with an attractive home game against Spain in the newly-formed UEFA Nations League.

In a change from the past few years, however, the match will not be shown on ITV but on Sky as they have secured the rights to fixtures in the new competition as well as for England's friendly matches.

There was little fanfare when the deal was announced, in 2017, partly as the Nations League concept had only just been announced and also because interest in the England team was probably at an all-time low after failure at Euro 2016 and then the sacking of Sam Allardyce.

What a difference now, of course, but just when people will be wanting to watch the Three Lions in action against two very good sides, in the shape of Spain and Croatia, they will not be able to do so on terrestrial TV.

ITV retain the rights to England’s qualifying matches for Euro 2020 (one of UEFA's reasons for the Nations League is the ability to separate the two competitions for TV rights purposes) but these games won't be coming around until 2019 and are likely to be of a lower-profile depending on the opposition.

The FA did not have a say in the deals, which are centrally negotiated by UEFA and it's not quite an England Cricket scenario whereby the huge interest generated by the 2005 Ashes victory was lost almost immediately by the switch to pay-TV but England's World Cup matches were genuinely national occasions that would not have been the same if they had not been broadcast on either BBC or ITV.
