Mixed Fortunes For England's Group Opponents

Belgium, Panama and Tunisia were all in action during the international break

Belgium remain the favourites to win Group G at Russia 2018, ahead of England who they meet in the third and final game of the opening stage, and eased to a 4-0 victory against Saudi Arabia in Brussels on Tuesday evening.

There has been some criticism that a tougher test was not arranged for the Red Devils during an international break when England met Holland and Italy, Spain took on Argentina and Brazil faced Germany.

Manager Roberto Martinez may have learned little that was new about his side but they made clear their attacking prowess against the Saudis, fellow finalists in Russia with Romelu Lukaku scoring twice and Kevin de Bruyne also netting.

Belgium are set to take on Portugal, Egypt and Costa Rica in June before their opening group game against Panama on the 18th.

Panama gained some positive reviews for their rugged display in limiting Denmark to a 1-0 victory in Copenhagen last Thursday but the World Cup debutants were then blown away by a Swiss side not normally noted for their goalscoring exploits.

Gareth Southgate's scout at the game will have noted enthusiastically how easily the Swiss carved open their opponents' defence in a first-half spell that brought four goals in 17 minutes.

And Tunisia look to be building optimistically towards the finals. They held a training camp at the beginning of the year after which the federation turned their attention to widening the pool of players available to coach Nabil Maaloul.

The Eagles of Carthage gained 1-0 victories against both Iran and Costa Rica during the international break although midfielder Mohamed Amine Ben Amor suffered a knee injury in the first game which could rule him out of the World Cup.

Portugal and Spain are on Tunisia's agenda before the big clash with England on June 18.
