New Liverpool Star To Lead Dutch Against England?

Virgil Van Dijk is a leading contender to captain the new-look Netherlands national team.

Ronald Koeman takes charge of the Oranje for the first time this coming Friday with Gareth Southgate's World Cup-bound England providing the friendly opposition in Amsterdam.

While the Three Lions are looking towards Russia in the summer it is a new era for the Dutch after their failure to make the World Cup and the retirement of star men such as Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday about the role of captain, Koeman commented: "It must be someone who has dominance in the group and plays in a certain position. Virgil van Dijk is a possibility."

For England the early speculation at the beginning of international week has been about the goalkeeping position with four custodians named in Gareth Southgate's squad including newcomer Nick Pope.

Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland are the others and Southgate told the FA website: “If we had a game tomorrow, we know who we would select and we wouldn’t want a lack of clarity going into the tournament.

“We'll be clear on that decision but it's not one that I'd want to announce now because there's a lot of football to be played and opportunities for people to impress.”
