A hugely respected figure in the football world, former Barnet and Stevenage manager Fairclough is the man responsible for the national team that brings together some of the best players from outside of the Football League.

That has meant international calls for the likes of Andrew Gray, now an established Premier League striker, George Boyd and Steve Morison.

England C have just finished their 2017 campaign, losing to Slovakia's Under-23 side in the final of the International Challenge Trophy but their achievements lie not just in results but in giving hundreds of players the opportunity to experience representing your country.

13 new faces did just that in Slovakia and Fairclough, speaking to the Non-League Paper, is keen to stay at the helm for the foreseeable future.

He said: "I want to continue with it because I’m passionate about what we do for the young players in this country.

“I wax lyrical about what England C does to the players, but I’m not deluded, the majority of the credit is with the managers and the coaches of their clubs, their bread and butter each week. They do a great job, all of them.

“They’ve cut the diamond, polishing all edges of that diamond, I just polish that last little edge and make it shine on the international stage.”
