Fabio Capello, the England coach, will not add another defender to his squad tof ace Switzlerland despite Michael Dawson's release back to Tottenham Hotspur.
The centre-back, 26, suffered a knee injury during Friday's 4-0 European Championship qualifying win over Bulgaria at Wembley, ruling him out of the trip to Basle on Tuesday.
He had a scan on Saturday morning and returned to his club for treatment.
He is expected to be out for up to two months after spraining his left medial knee ligament and a left ankle ligament during a tackle in the second-half.
Gary Cahill replaced Dawson on Friday night, forming a central defensive partnership with Phil Jagielka. Capello also has Joleon Lescott and Matthew Upson in his squad.
