Player to Watch: Callum Wilson

A product of the Coventry City academy, Wilson was handed his first real chance in a Sky Blue shirt shortly after Steven Pressley’s arrival as manager at the Ricoh Arena in early 2013.

He made an instant impact, scoring as a substitute against Colchester in March of that year but it was the following season when he came to the fore.

Pressley paired the speedy youngster alongside the experienced Leon Clarke and the duo caused plenty of problems for League One defences as Coventry shook off a 10-point deduction in an excellent first-half of the season.

Clarke left for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the January transfer window and, as a host of loan strikers came and went, Wilson was forced to plough more of a lone furrow in a side that had completely lost form and confidence but still managed to boost his goal total to an impressive 22 for the campaign.

A level-headed youngster, Wilson chose Bournemouth and Eddie Howe as the next step in his career and two goals on his competitive debut at Huddersfield on the opening day of the 2014/15 season set the tone for another 20+ strikes and promotion for the Cherries.

Two serious injuries have hampered progress since then but Wilson's Premier League scoring record in the games he has played points at a productive remainder of 2017/18.

With everything up for grabs in terms of Gareth Southgate's squad, after the introduction of a host of new players in the recent international break, Russia 2018 is a realistic target.
