Player to Watch: James Maddison

Aidy Boothroyd named the 20-year-old in his squad for the forthcoming trip to face Ukraine, capping a fruitful few weeks for the player after he scored the winning goal in the East Anglian derby at Portman Road.

Maddison is a product of the Coventry City academy and was tipped for bigger things from a young age.

Tony Mowbray arrived as Sky Blues manager in 2015 and was clearly impressed by the player, handing him plenty of responsibility in a relegation fight at the end of the 2014/15 season and then making him the focal point of an attack-minded side for the following campaign.

Maddison suffered an injury early in that season but showed plenty of quality in the number 10 jersey, surrounded by plenty of pace and youth with the likes of Ryan Kent and Adam Armstrong.

All of the usual suspects were reportedly set to make a move for his talents but it was the slightly surprising destination of Carrow Road that he plumped for in the January transfer window of 2016.

Norwich immediately loaned him back to Coventry, where the exciting football from earlier in the season was fading badly away.

Frustration from Sky Blues supporters at their club's plight occasionally latched itself on to the academy product but Maddison appeared unconcerned by any criticism and has since earned praise for the links he maintains with Coventry, coming back to watch his former team whenever possible.

The next stage in his career was another loan move, this time to Aberdeen where he gained currency from Reds fans with a free-kick winner against Rangers at Pittodrie.

Now, the arrival of Daniel Farke as Canaries coach, Maddison has become a regular in the Championship and again the subject of transfer talk.

He has played for England at youth level and the national team hierarchy will be impressed by total confidence in his own quality and the ability to keep receiving the ball in dangerous areas between the midfield and defence and make probing runs into the opposition box.
