England comfortably defeated the USA at Wembley on Thursday evening on a night of positives for Gareth Southgate as Wayne Rooney made his farewell to international football in front of over 68,000.

Rooney played the final 35 minutes of the friendly with Jadon Sancho making his home debut and Callum Wilson capping his first senior England appearance with the third goal after first-half strikes from Jesse Lingard and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The USA offered little resistance but England's confidence after the win in Spain was clear for all to see as they attacked their opponents from the first whistle.

As a warm-up for Sunday's game against Croatia it gave Southgate some further welcome selection options and the manager will also be pleased that the Croatia clash has plenty riding on it.

A 3-2 victory for the Croats against Spain on the same evening means that England could top their Nations League group with a victory on Sunday but could also be relegated from the top-tier of the new competition.
