Southgate Encouraged By England Display

Gareth Southgate was pleased with his England side's display in unusual circumstances on Friday evening as their World Cup semi-final rematch with Croatia was played out in front of an empty stadium as part of a UEFA punishment towards the Croatia FA for previous misdemeanours.

Marcus Rashford missed two clear-cut chances to win a Nations League tie that took some time to get going but which ended with England on top in Rijeka.

"If we'd been a little bit more ruthless with our chances, we should’ve won the game," said Southgate after springing a surprise with his formation ahead of the match by reverting to a back four instead of playing with three central defenders.

"When I look at some of the young players coming through, there’s wide players and number eights who might suit that system," said the England boss.

One of those younger players was Borussia Dortmund's debutant Jadon Sancho and the Under-17 World Cup winner showed enough in a short cameo as a substitute to justify his selection in the senior squad which now moves on to a huge test against Spain on Monday evening.
