Gareth Southgate feels England have built a base with their World Cup performances that will form the foundations of their Euro 2020 challenge.

The England manager named his squad on Thursday for the upcoming matches against Spain in the UEFA Nations League and Switzerland in a friendly, with the experienced trio of Gary Cahill, Jamie Vardy and Ashley Young all notable absentees from the party that travelled to the World Cup.

"When you look at the squad I have named, all of that squad should be available in two years time," said Southgate after bringing the fit-again Adam Lallana back into the fold along with Manchester United's rejuvenated Luke Shaw.

"We only have 20 matches between now and the European Championship. We don't want to waste time looking at new things.

"We have to continue to progress but we are working off a solid foundation this time."

England’s schedule between now and the start of the 2020 Euros comprises of a minimum of four matches in the new Nations League (with a semi-final and final to come if they top the group ahead of Spain and Croatia) and ten European Championship qualifiers in addition to friendlies.
