Gareth Southgate has named his squad for the Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain and handed first call-ups to James Maddison of Leicester City, Derby County's Chelsea loanee Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho, once of Manchester City but now making headlines in the Bundesliga with Borussia Dortmund.

"Jadon's is an unusual story for a young English player. He's been brave enough to go abroad and play," said Southgate of the Under-17 World Cup winner.

While call-ups for the trio had been expected to a greater or lesser degree, Southgate sprung a surprise with a recall to the fold for Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley as he enjoys a renewed lease of life under new Stamford Bridge supremo Maurizio Sarri.

Barkley, Maddison and Sancho, if they get their chance during the tough double-header of away matches, will be charged with adding to England's creative options after the struggle to score goals from open play during the World Cup.

Watford's Nathaniel Chalobah is also included despite a lack of Premier League playing time this season but Southgate believes the benefits of the greater fluidity and co-operation between England teams of all ages will stand the midfielder in good stead.

"We have to approach it from a different angle now. We can't wait for a player to have two seasons in the Premier League, or be playing every week in his team.

"Nat has more youth caps bar perhaps James Milner, he trained with us in the summer and has had two 90 minutes for Watford in the League Cup or thereabouts. We know the qualities he has."
