The Winter Break: A Boost For England?

The first-ever winter break in English football is close to being implemented for the 2019/20 season.

It would involve FA Cup Fifth Round ties being played in midweek, with no replays, to allow for all top-flight clubs to have at least 13 days without a match.

Although one of the factors involved in the decision is cited as being a boost to England, ahead of Euro 2020 which culminates in a Wembley final, the interests of the national team have been used before as a driver for something that the bigger clubs wants, notably with the formation of the Premier League itself.

In total it would mean only one fewer match for those players whose clubs reach the FA Cup Fifth Round and another blow to the prestige of the famous competition itself if the Football Association agree to the proposals.
