World Cup Draws Closer For England's Lionesses

The build-up to France 2019 starts in earnest this weekend for Phil Neville and his England team as they take on Denmark in their penultimate warm-up match before the World Cup, preparations being fine-tuned against New Zealand next Saturday.

With his squad having been named well ahead of the deadline, Neville has sought to avoid any unwanted distractions and focus his players minds on the challenge of a tournament for which they are seen as strong contenders given a third-placed finish in Canada four years ago.

Knowing that he had inherited a squad who have recently reached the latter stages of major competitions and a well-established structure, there has been no revolution under the former Manchester United and Everton man but he will hope that the growing strength of the club game in England and the experience gained by the likes of Lucy Bronze at Lyon will see the key moments in crucial games at France 2019 go the Lionesses way.

But before the knockout stages comes a tricky group stage where 2011 winners Japan and Argentina await after the 9 June opener in Nice against Scotland.

Neville isn't somebody prone to underselling his side but possibly could have done without facing the Scots first up even if England despatched the same opponents 6-0 at Euro 2017.

Having achieved qualification for their first ever World Cup, momentum is growing for Shelley Kerr’s side and they will depart for France via a final warm-up at Hampden Park next week.

Over half of Kerr's squad play their football in England and club friendships will certainly become rivalries on the Riviera early next month.
