The United States are considering launching a bid to host the 2018 World Cup finals - even though they hosted the tournament as recently as 1994.
England are hoping to hold the competition in 10 years time, having last held it in 1966.
America held it in 1994, but the US Soccer Federation president Sunil Galati suggested this would work in their favour.
"We will make a decision in the next two or three months, but we are looking at it very seriously," he said.
"I can't think of any reasons why we wouldn't bid for the tournament. We've done this before and been successful at doing it."
