Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll have been left out of the England squad for next month's European Championship finals.

Stuart Pearce, the U21 coach, had hoped to take both players to the tournament in Denmark but has lost his battle with their respective clubs.

The omission of Wilshere was a surprise, as his Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger had expected his inclusion.

Otherwise there are no major surprises in the squad, which includes four players who have represented the Three Lions at senior level in Micah Richards, Kieran Gibbs, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck.

Frank Fielding, Michael Mancienne, Chris Smalling and Kyle Walker have all been involved in the senior team set-up also.

Pearce's side play their final pre-tournament friendly against Norway at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton on June 5.

They have been drawn in Group B in the finals, and will open their campaign against Spain on June 12 before going on to face Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
The top two teams in each group will go through to the semi-finals.
