Four bids to host Euro 2016 were lodged with Uefa before Monday's deadline, the governing body for football in Europe have said.

Turkey, France and Italy have all put their names forward along with a joint bid from Norway and Sweden.

The bidders have until February 15 2010 to prepare their formal bids, with a decision to be made at the end of May.

Turkey and Norway have never held a major football tournament. France held the World Cup in 1998, Sweden the World Cup in 1958 and European Championship in 1992 while Italy's last tournament was the World Cup in 1990.

Scotland and Wales had considered a joint bid but backed out due to the financial implicaitons of hosting a 24-team tournament.
