John Toshack, the Wales coach, said his side must defeat Bulgaria next month to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship finals alive - despite only playing one game of the campaign.

A 1-0 loss to Montenegro in Podgorica was a disappointing start to the campaign for Toshack's side.

"I think the next game against Bulgaria is now a must-win game, or we are virtually not going to have too much chance, to be honest, with two supposedly tougher sides, Switzerland and England, coming after that," he said.

"In the next game we have got to go out there in very determined fashion."

Wales host Bulgria on Friday October 8, before travelling to Basel four days later. Defeats in both matches would leave them adrift even before they host England in March.

Wales will have to improve on their performance from Friday night, when a late surge for an equaliser clouded a poor display.

"I thought the first half we didn't get to grips with things at all, particularly the midfield area," added Toshack.

"In the second half I thought we improved and pushed forward a lot more. We got to grips a little bit, maybe we were worth something. I think they were very pleased to hear the final whistle.

"We didn't have quite enough craft to get through in the final third. We have failed to score, been beaten 1-0 and it is very disappointing."
