Kelly Smith became the top goalscorer in the history of the England women's side as they defeated Switzerland in the opening leg of their World Cup play-off in Shrewsbury.

England controlled the opening period, hitting the bar through Rachel Yankey then Eniola Aluko in the 11th minute, with Kelly Smith and Yankey getting in the way of each other from the second rebound.

Alex Scott fired wide after 28 minutes, when she seemed to mis-hit the shot, after being played through be Eniola Aluko.

Katie Chapman hit the ball over after 37 minutes with a half-volley from just outside the area following a head back from Jill Scott.

Fara Williams finally opened the scoring after 43 minutes, after Scott and Smith brought great saves from the visiting keeper Marisa Brunner.

Smith smashed home a second in first-half stoppage time after a pullback from Scott. It was her 41st senior goal, making her the top scorer in the history of the side ahead of Karen Walker's 40.

England were comfortable in the second-half but created few chances while Rachel Brown, the England keeper, had to be aware to tip over a long shot by Noemie Beney.
