England coach Hope Powell conceded her Three Lionessess side will have to improve from their opening performance if they are to progress to the knockout stages of the Women's World Cup.

Powell's side were held to a 1-1 draw by Mexico in Wolfsburg on Monday, with a long-range effort from Monica Ocampo earning the Central Americans their first-ever finals point after Fara Williams had headed England into the lead.

"I'm glad we didn't lose, that's the main thing It was a great strike from them which pulled them back into the game," said Powell.

"We're disappointed we didn't win the game, but we go again for the next one. Our players struggled a little bit with the heat, but no excuses, our players can play better and we'll have to play better if we want to stay in the tournament."
