The England Women's U20 side were eliminated from the World Cup after losing their final group game to Japan
Emi Nakajima scored after 20 minutes to ensure the Three Lionesses would have to score twice to stand any chance of going through.
Both sides knew their fate was out of their hands - win and they would only go through if Nigeria and Mexico did not finish level. Japan looked to be on course as they held their one-goal advantage at the break.
Mo Marley, the England coach, made several changes that made her side more effective. Danielle Carter was the pick of the three substitutes that came on throughout the second-half.
England were establishing themselves back in the game, but were dealt a sucker blow after 74 minutes when Natasuki Kishikawa flicked the ball home with her head following a free-kick.
That knocked the belief out of England, and Kiskikawa put the result beyond doubt four minutes later with a half-volley from another set-piece.
England did pull one back after 83 minutes when Everton's Toni Duggan converted a penalty kick when Carter went down in the area.
It all proved academic, however, as a goal from Alina Garciamendez with 13 minutes to go ensured Japan also exited the tournament with England.
