Hope Powell, the England Women's manager, has shown she intends to take the World Cup qualifier against Austria seriously - despite their group already being won - by recalling Kelly Smith and Karen Carney to her side.

England head to the continent on Saturday August 21 looking to maintain momentum ahead of a two-legged play-off for a place in next year's World Cup finals in Germany.

Smith and Carney missed last month's 3-0 win over Turkey due to injuries, but return at the expense of Carly Telford and Dani Buet.

"It's important we win the game because we want to be as high in the play-off seedings as possible and I have selected a strong squad for that very reason," said Powell.

"I'm pleased that we have secured top spot with a game to spare but we're not at the World Cup yet. We must beat Austria and hope that Scotland do us a favour against Denmark to give ourselves the best possible chance in the play-offs."
