A football club trying to fight its relegation from Chile's top flight through legal action have stopped their claim after being warned it could prompt their national team to be thrown out of next year's World Cup finals.
Fifa had warned Chile’s football association could be suspended from internationals if the dispute was not resolved ahead of their executive committee meeting in South Africa on Thursday.
Rangers, the club who will now definitely be relegated, dropped their legal proceedings on Tuesday. They were fined three points during the season for fielding too many foreign players in a match, had it not been for the deduction they would have competing in a play-off with the chance of survival.
Chile last qualified for a World Cup finals in 1998. They finished second in Group B after drawing with Italy, Austria and Cameroon. They were beaten 4-1 by Brazil, who went on to reach the final, in the second round.
