Belgium rematch gives Wiegman food for thought

Just days after seeing her side put five unanswered goals past Belgium in Bristol, a 3-2 defeat in the reverse fixture saw Sarina Wiegman admit that England Women's performance in Leuven was not up to standard.

The Ashton Gate success, on the back of the Wembley win against Spain at the beginning of the year, had increased talk around another Euros triumph for England this summer but that prospect looked a little further away as Belgium came out of the blocks in style with three goals in the opening half-an-hour.

An England comeback, with goals from Beth Mead and debutant Michelle Agyemang, briefly flickered but left Wiegman with plenty to ponder ahead of the final Nations League fixtures, at home to Portugal at Wembley and away in Spain, although the manager could also point to some key players missing through injury and a 'learning curve' that will actually be a positive experience for her side when it comes to the tournament in Switzerland in the summer.

England face a tricky group stage in the defence of their European crown after not given a top seeding for the draw, placed alongside France, 2017 winners Holland and Wales.

England will play France and the Netherlands in Zurich (5 and 9 July) before rounding off the group against the Welsh in St. Gallen on 13 July.
