Early Brazil goals sink England

England took on Brazil on Saturday, their first match since winning the Euros, but were stunned at the City of Manchester Stadium as the Copa America champions netted twice within the opening 20 minutes.

A red card for Angelina shortly afterwards allowed England to regain control of the play, if not the scoreline, but for all of their efforts, including nearly 70% of possession, there was to be no repeat of the late drama of the summer with only a Georgia Stanway penalty to show for their efforts.

For both teams it was a first step on the road to the 2027 World Cup and hosts Brazil, having selected a number of new faces, will be delighted to have laid down an early marker for the tournament.

Sarina Wiegman handed Khiara Keating a debut in goal, with Hannah Hampton, injured but otherwise England had a familiar look to them.

They have a further friendly to come against Australia at Pride Park on Tuesday.
