England stay alive after Swedish drama

Holders England are through to the semi-finals of Euro 2025 after a dramatic night in Zurich in which they looked down and out at one stage against Sweden.

Trailing 2-0 and kept in the game by the saves of Hannah Hampton, a roll of the dice by Sarina Wiegman was rewarded with two goals in as many minutes from Lucy Bronze and substitute Michelle Agyemang.

A stalemate in extra-time then led to a penalty shoot-out that won't be remembered for its quality but was high on nerve-shredding moments as Sweden missed a second chance to secure their place in the final four.

Much has been made in the aftermath of the game as to whether England got out of jail after a chaotic first-half display but tournament football doesn't always follow logic and the Lionesses were ultimately rewarded for not giving up on their dream of a second successive Euros crown.

While admitting to a dose of luck, Wiegman said afterwards: "That's a quality that is so strong in this team, that togetherness and fighting back. It shows so much resilience."

Italy now stand between England the final with the game to be played on Tuesday evening in Geneva.
