He played a neat wall pass with Gomes, who backheeled the ball back to Gama, and the winger cut inside, took his time and eventually curled an effort into the back of the net to spark off wild celebrations amongst the players.

Vitor nearly got a second for Portugal after going on a powerful run down the left, but his shot couldn't find the target as his shot flashed into the side netting.

The second half saw plenty of chances early on, with Hidalgo dragging a shot wide for USA, while Marques, Barbosa and Gama came close for the leaders, and they didn't have to wait long to extend their lead.
Gomes, who lead the line well all afternoon, cut inside from the right wing, took on two defenders before slotting the ball past the keeper, in off the post.
