Spain in the way again for England

If England's Women are to retain their European crown then they must find a way to get past Spain in Sunday's final, a repeat of the World Cup final of 2023.

Favourites Spain overcame Germany in extra-time on Wednesday to book their trip to Basel and, although made to work hard for the victory, again displayed a level of control over the game in contrast to an England side whose progress through the tournament has been helter-skelter at times but who have been propelled over the line by their attacking depth as the likes of Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly have played crucial roles as substitutes.

Sarina Wiegman will now have to find a way past a team who England have already played twice this year, winning in the Nations League at Wembley before defeat in the reverse fixture in Barcelona, and Wiegman's role in once again delivering a shot at a major trophy has been praised by FA chief executive Mark Bullingham.

"Her record of managing in five tournaments and reaching five finals is phenomenal," he said.

"I don't believe anyone has been anywhere near that in the past and it will be really hard to do that in the future.

"She's a really special coach and we're delighted to have her with us."
