A Last 'World Cup Feeling' For England?

Last updated : 09 July 2018 By Three Lions

The players, management, travelling fans and supporters back home are enjoying that special World Cup feeling as England prepare for Wednesday evening's semi-final against Croatia.

Saturday's win against Sweden tipped the balance between a good competition and a successful one for the Three Lions and sparked a day of celebrations back home in the sunshine.

That sense of anticipation, of counting down the moments until the next game, hasn’t been felt since Euro 96 and not at a World Cup since Italia 90.

Supporters out in Russia are trying to find ways of staying on for a few more days while others will be searching for flights and tickets in a last-gasp bid to see some of the action in person.

In England, big-screens are being put up in towns and cities and a host of plans for Wednesday evening are being altered including friendly matches up and down the land which are being rescheduled.

Amidst the enjoyment will this be the last time the World Cup is able to spark this kind of feeling?

Russia 2018 has been self-contained, in the summer (at decent times for watching at home) and the 32-team tournament lends itself perfectly to the format of group stages, last 16, quarter, semi and final.

Fast forward four years and Qatar 2022 will be played in our winter and with domestic football merely 'on hold' for the tournament there will inevitably be a diminishing of that feeling whereby the World Cup is what everything that has happened previously in the season has been leading up to.

And after that (or maybe in 2022 if FIFA bring it forward) we will move on to a 48-team competition and a compromise of the format mentioned above.
