Can Montenegro Make It Difficult Again?

England travel to face Montenegro, where international matches are regularly played in the Podgorica City Stadium in the capital city on Monday evening after both sides began their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign in positive fashion on Friday.

While England showed their attacking options to the full in the 5-0 victory against the Czech Republic there was plenty for Montenegro to be pleased with as they returned from Bulgaria with a 1-1 draw amid plenty of controversy about the hosts’ late penalty equaliser.

Their squad for these two qualifiers is drawn from far and wide in terms of club football with Stefan Mugosa, the goalscorer in Bulgaria, currently playing with Incheon United of South Korea but the most recognisable names, Stefan Savic and Stevan Jovetic, are missing due to injury.

Montenegro won two of their six UEFA Nations League matches in the autumn, avoiding relegation to League D of the new competition thanks to a double victory against Lithuania.

England have played Montenegro on four previous occasions and they have proved surprisingly tough opponents, holding the Three Lions to two draws in Euro 2012 qualifying and another on the road to Brazil 2014 before England registered a 4-1 victory at Wembley in October 2013 to leave them on the brink of securing their World Cup place.
