England Set To Face A New Spain?

Hugely successful at Barcelona, Enrique is the man that the Spanish FA have turned to as the permanent successor to Julen Lopetegui who was dramatically sacked just before the World Cup after agreeing a deal to coach Real Madrid after Russia 2018.

The 2010 champions showed flashes of their quality, notably in their opening game against Portgual, but were surprisingly knocked out in the last 16 by the hosts.

That defeat saw Andres Iniesta confirm his retirement and there is also doubts over the future of his former Barcelona colleague Gerard Pique.

La Liga, however, remains a competition full of quality and Enrique claims he has written down 70 potential names for his first squad which will be to take on England at Wembley in the new UEFA Nations League tournament on 8 September.

"Football is a continuous evolution and we'll look to do just that to the current idea we have,” he said at his first press conference.

“We can play good football, be aggressive, control the ball and hurt our opponents. There's things we need to improve, too."

Tickets for the Spain game, England’s first since the World Cup, are on general sale now.
