Aidy Boothroyd will name his squad for the European Championships on Monday 27 May, the England Under-21 boss having just pen to paper on a two-year contract extension and looking to celebrate by guiding his side to competition honours in Italy and San Marino this summer.

Boothroyd told the FA website: “I’m delighted to sign an extension to my contract. I thoroughly enjoy this role working with excellent players, a fantastic group of staff and in an elite environment at St. George’s Park along with the other national coaches.

“For me, it’s been especially rewarding to see so many players go up to the seniors from our development squads, whether making their debuts or establishing themselves in Gareth’s squad."

Hugely impressive in qualifying, England are likely to have a familiar look to them when the tournament begins with Gareth Southgate having largely opted against moving players up to the senior squad for the Nations League Finals.

That means the likes of James Maddison, in sparkling form for Leicester City at the end of the Premier League season, will get the chance to finish their cycle as Under-21's with a shot at glory although hosts Italy, Germany, Spain and opening group opponents France will all provide very tough opposition.

England will also take on Romania and Croatia in the group stage.
